Well well :) for some time now, alot of people have asked me to do a tutorial on how to create textures for planetary use. Well, in this tutorial i show some pretty fast, easy and good ways to create textures wich you can use for your planets. I show how to easily implement water into your texture and im pretty sure that by the end of this tutorial, you guys will be creating smashing textures yourself :D

As you can see i've zipped some files here. Its the highres version of the tutorial itself, and two jpeg images and a fractal image. Please use these if you want to achieve the same result as i've shown in the tutorial.

Damn this took some time. I was originally planning to make a spacepicture yesterday, but i ended up working on this one :) and it took me around 5 - 6 hours i think.

I hope it'll be of use to you guys/girls. And please, if you guys have any questions, just ask

Oho, ^alyn and *sirgerg are gonna be pissed.

Personally - I like it. Wonderful insight to your texturing method. Although, you must note that with method you often end up with fairly evenly-textured, mottled, semi-interesting planets that could be much better replaced by planets that have had thought and a great deal more effort to their creation. I'm sure you yourself know how to experiment and deviate off the beaten track of this method to create excellent-looking planets, but others do not. I sincerely hope that we do not end up with a trendwhore new planet style because of this.

The tutorial is well made & each step is nicely explained. I like the footnote that leaves the technique thoroughly open to experimentation and variation. The point about knowing when to stop when creating textures is also true - some of the best peices are made on the spur of the moment with a good dose of inspiration.

Excellent work.
nice tute.. very informative :)
hehe, good point there. Well, as i stated in the end of the tutorial, im just pointing out some of the methods i use. Its up to the single individual to take it further and work out the details that seperate the average planet from the superb. Im planning on making a total of three tutorials on the texturing bit, basic intermediate and advanced, where im gonna enlight different ways of working with the textures.

Anyways, glad you liked it bro :)

Alice: Dave's voice on that is quite scary. That cannot be natural
Joel: Dave is not natural.
Good work Arve! It should teach some people something new, seeing as you explain things other tutorials havent, & shown some of your innovative techniques. (the fractal for instance). I am sure this will help alot of people who kept asking for a tutorial hehe. ;) You did a good job explaining to! Good work. :)
